Whitetail Deer Throat Patch Removal Instructions
PLEASE READ INSTRUCTIONS THOROUGHLY BEFORE STARTING.
Important: You are responsible for the quality of your sample.
1. Remove the neck tissue containing the lymph nodes at the same time the animal is field dressed.
2. Once the tissue is removed place the tissue in the plastic bag and keep cool.
3.
Ship as soon as possible using the shipping packaging and following the
shipping Instructions provided.
Warning:
The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture Trade and
Consumer Protection has advised hunters to avoid handling the brain, spinal cord
and lymph nodes of the deer. To
minimize risk of contact when removing the tissue sample, use the protective
gloves provided. The gloves
provided are made of latex. If you
are allergic to latex, you should use a non-latex substitute.
Step 1
Position head upside down to expose jaw and neck
area. Locate back of jaw bone and
measure up toward mouth 3 to 4 inches. This
is your first entry point. Insert
knife and cut across to same point on opposite side of jaw bone.

Step
2
Insert
knife behind jaw bone at first entry point keeping knife blade up against jaw
bone as close as possible. Cut
along edge of law, guiding knife to the back of the jaw bone taking as much
tissue as possible. Repeat on
opposite side of jaw. This step is
very important as the lymph nodes are located in this area.

Step 3
Locate tongue within the 1st incision and
cut through to separate.

Step
4
Locate
larynx (voice box) by grabbing upper neck and feeling for enlarged bulbous area.
Holding larynx, cut through the base of the bulb, across the neck and
down to the spinal cord. Continue cutting up side of neck toward back of jaw bone
connecting incision on both sides.

Step
5
Locate
hyoid bone by pulling tissue back away from jaw and feeling for a small boney
structure along side of neck. Cut through hyoid bone. Then start cutting tissue
away, all the way down to neck meat making sure all tissue is removed and neck
cavity is totally free of tissue.

Step
6
Put
tissue into plastic bag. Check neck
cavity to make sure all tissue is removed. If there is any tissue remaining in
neck cavity, remove and put into bag. Seal
bag and keep it cool.

Step
7
Package the plastic bag containing the tissue sample using the enclosed packaging materials according to the shipping instructions provided. Mail as soon as possible.
